Julia was prompted by the Sky Island Alliance to create these digital paintings to promote awareness of the need for preservation of the Santa Catalina sky island in southeastern Arizona. The Sky Island Alliance is a regional conservation nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring the nature of the Sky Islands in the US and Mexico. The sky island region has 55 mountain ranges that rise out of grasslands and deserts. These ranges are important for their local unique plants and wildlife. Julia chose to highlight the flora, fauna, and mountain landscape of the Santa Catalina sky island. She illustrated a saguaro cactus, a Santa Catalina island fox, and the Santa Catalina mountain sunset. She hopes to highlight the unique beauty of this area to raise support for the Sky Island Alliance.
